Summer brought a lot of firsts for Offbeat Birdfolk.

Our first Correspondence Collection officially made its way out into the world—nine Birdfolk paintings transformed into beautiful 5 × 7 folded cards, tucked into their own little black box and ready to be written in, mailed, gifted, kept, and passed along. Some people are even framing them!

There is something especially satisfying about seeing the birds leave the canvas and begin taking on lives of their own.

Now that my art show season has come to an end, we’re turning our attention toward finding the right homes for the Correspondence Collection. We’re beginning to explore shops, galleries, museum stores, boutiques, and other spaces that feel aligned with this strange little world we’re building. Over the winter and spring, we’ll also be experimenting with new and creative ways to introduce Birdfolk to more people.

But perhaps the thing I’m most excited about right now is what comes next.

Birdfolk HOME.

We recently had our first meeting with a London-based textile designer who has worked with some wonderful fashion, art, and home décor brands, and we’ve officially begun exploring how my paintings might make their way into textiles.

Right now, we are at the very beginning.

We’re talking with suppliers. Ordering fabric samples. Thinking about texture and construction and scale. Looking at individual birds and imagining what happens when they leave their frames and begin inhabiting the objects around us.

Our first focus will be pillows, but what excites me most is the larger idea behind BIRDFOLK HOME.

I want this collection to feel elevated and beautifully made, while still retaining the awkwardness and playfulness that makes Birdfolk who they are. Pieces for people who love beautiful, sophisticated spaces—but also want to invite a little something unexpected into them.

Something curious.

Something slightly strange.

Something that makes you look twice.

The idea of living with these characters feels incredibly exciting to me. Birdfolk has always been about recognizing pieces of ourselves in these peculiar little beings, and there is something so fitting about imagining them becoming part of our everyday environments.

ERIC is also beginning to look at shifting his workload so that he can be more available as Birdfolk enters this next stage and there becomes more to build, organize, pack, ship, dream up, and figure out.

And Kenzie has already joined the unofficial design department. She’s been doodling her own ideas for birds on pillows, which feels pretty appropriate for where we are right now.

There isn’t much that is tangible to show you just yet—and I think that might actually be my favorite part.

We’re standing at that very early point where an idea is beginning to become real.

There are fabric swatches to touch, suppliers to meet, samples to order, questions we don’t know enough to ask yet, and so much to learn. I have no idea exactly what Birdfolk Home will look like when all of those pieces come together.

But I know how I want it to feel.

Beautiful. Unexpected. Artful. A little awkward.

And very much alive.

I can’t wait to fill you in when there are actual objects to share. For now, we’re enjoying this strange and exciting beginning—and imagining all the ways these Birdfolk might eventually find their way into our homes and everyday lives.

Stay Curious,

Jacqué
